Lady Gaga Versace Ad

An unrealistic beauty ideal (particularly in America) contributes to growing number of anorexia, bulimia, body dysmorphia, and general body self consciousness amongst young adults and particularly young women. Despite these issues, media continues to manipulate images in order to continue to promote unrealistic beauty standards. This is particularly problematic for young women as they are often most targeted by these ads advocating for perfectly flawless skin and a size zero. For example, Versace's Spring 2014 ad featuring Lady Gaga. Although Lady Gaga is typically someone whom is thought to be representative of self expression and freedom, her image is manipulated in order to make her appear like every other pop icon--flawless. Why is this acceptable?
