Gosh, Jay Z, You Must Be Awfully Secure in Your Masculinity!

With the recent readings in our last module about queering masculinities, I came across this article about Jay Z dressing up as a Ken Barbie doll for Halloween. We all know that Halloween is the time of year when most women get the back lash for being scantily dressed, but no one really discusses how Halloween may impact men. The Halloween costumes for men are your typical sexy cop, firefighter or construction worker get up. The recent objectification of men during this night is one aspect of the issue. In this article, they author discusses the backlash Jay Z recently received when him and Beyonce dressed up as Barbie and Ken for their daughter Blue Ivy. The expectation that men are supposed to be the epitome of masculinity is the real issue. Jay Z, a rapper known for embracing all aspects of masculinity, was viewed as being "soft" for dressing up as what is known as a little girl's play doll. The author makes a valid point. A masculine man, is someone who would do anything for their family, even if it means blurring the lines of what it means to be manly.
