Dudeoir photos! Have to you ever heard of them? No, neither
had I until this Buzzfeed article. Initially I thought that it was a great
idea. Men should be able to engage in things that help boost their self-esteem
and make them feel sexy as well. I thought that it was great to see a “regular”
guy be confident and comfortable enough to do something like taking such
vulnerable photos. However, if you look at the photos below, you will get the
sense that he did this as more of joke, than as something serious that goes
against tradition. All semester long we have been reading about the masks that
men hide behind and this article showcased one of them perfectly. I got the
sense that in order to protect his manhood, he felt the need to poke fun at or
present a silly façade in this style of photography. I can respect the fact
that he might be trying to make commentary in the fact women often shown in
absurd or unnecessarily complicated ways, in order to be viewed as sexy or
attractive. In my opinion, this isn’t that, it’s just a guy reproducing the
same kind of masculinity that he has been socialized to. It would have been
such a powerful and meaningful thing if he engaged in this in a more authentic
and honest way.
