The first openly gay athlete in a North American professional
sport was Robbie Rogers. He initially came out when he was 30 years old after
he had announced his retirement. At the age of 30 announcing our sexuality to
the world becomes something that is not only a personal but international spectacle.
After his said fear and shame of his sexuality that he hid from the rest of the
world he felt comfortable releasing this information after his retiring. The
many differences that professional athletes are faced with regarding sexuality shape
professional sport culture today.
