Who hasn't seen the millions of Ryan Gosling "Hey Girl" memes that fill Pinterest boards and are shared via Facebook walls daily?
I have made my own memes using my husband as a Gosling stand-in when I want to make fun of a situation we have going on in our own lives.
Danielle Henderson, graduate student in gender studies began a Tumblr feed (feministryangosling.tumblr.com) as a joke, according to her FAQ page. Her satire of the "Hey Girl" memes, now bound and covered in book form "Feminist Ryan Gosling," has been featured in national magazines such as GQ, Newsweek, Huffington Post, and a slew more.
She says, "I have no idea if Ryan Gosling is actually a feminist, and don't make any assumptions here of that sort." Henderson riffs on what many call a sexist joke by making a joke of the joke.
Whether Gosling is a feminist or not is not the topic of discussion, but a man can definitely be a feminist, or pro-feminist. Joke or not, Feminist Ryan Gosling makes sensitive guys more attractive and men who stand up for women's right a lot more appealing.
