Erika L. Sánchez wrote this interesting article, it talks about how masculinity and male culture harms both women and men, but it largely focuses on men.
I think it's interesting that Sánchez concentrates on how masculinity hurts men, because it may appeal to men more, as it directly affects them instead of affecting someone else.
Sánchez discusses how
because of how our society socializes men, they severely repress their
emotions, which leads to them “becoming incapable of understanding who they are
and what they feel.” She then goes to discuss how repressing emotions can
actually lead to physical consequences, such as heart disease, high blood
pressure, and back pain.
She then goes on to
discuss how macho culture encourages aggression and violence. Sánchez discusses
how the encouragement to be violence can lead to men not being able to relax.
After, she discusses how our culture helps encourage violence with our movie
and music glorifying it and teaching young boys that violence is the way to
solve things.
Moving on, Sánchez examines
the third way that dominant masculinity harms men; it perpetuates one-dimensional
representation of men in the media.
